Arrow Valley Countryside

AT an extraordinary meeting of the Arrow Valley Countryside Group, Mrs Pat Tomlinson was elected as the new secretary. This was followed by a very entertaining talk by Ralph Richardson on William Sable, an agricultural labourer who lived on the Ridgeway from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth. The basis of Mr Richardson's research was from the paying out book of the Overseer of the Poor for Ipsley and Parish records. Our next meeting was a talk entitled "A walk on the wild side" by Mr M Ecob in which he described a camping expedition to the Kruger National Park illustrated with slides of the flora, insects, birds and close encounters with wild game. The first walk of 2002, led by Rod Quilter, started from Cookhill when 13 members groped their way through fog and mud on a seven mile walk via Weethley and Alcester, arriving safely back at Cookhill having enjoyed the experience. Our next walk, led by Carol Quick and Brian Michie, started on an uphill track from Snowshill, crossing the Cotswold way, descending to Stanton, thence to Buckland and then up a steep path to Broadway Coppice where we found enough shelter from the rain to eat our lunch. From here we followed a level path with good views, eventually descending back to Snowshill. The third walk of the month, led by Mavis Booker and Carol Quick, started at Dodford when 14 walkers followed a four mile circular route through beautiful and varied countryside. We descended to the muddy river valley then a steep path joining the Monarch's Way. We crossed Warbage Lane and Yarnold Lane, through Bournheath and rejoined the river valley at Valley Wood, passing Alfred's Well on the way back to the Dodford Inn for lunch. New members will be made most welcome. For further information ring 01527 402663.   more...

Chaddesley Corbett WI

MEMBERS and visitors were welcomed to the February meeting of Chaddesley Corbett WI by President Sylvia Beardshaw. Wine and fruit juices would be provided at the start of the evening. Clothes from Kate Barclay Fashions and underwear by Lejaby would be modelled. Tickets cost £5. The number to ring for information and tickets is 01527 873270. After further notices, Peter Preece gave a talk and slide show. He described his technique for photographing birds. The results were outstanding and something which started as a hobby now takes up most of his time. He has won many national and international awards and he shows a great love of his subject. The vote of thanks was given by Betty Onions. The next meeting will be held in the village hall today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.   more...

Spadesbourne Ladies Club

CHEERFUL chairman, Mrs Betty Long, was happy to welcome nearly 60 members and visitors to the February meeting. Mary Rutter reported that she has already started to make bookings for speakers for the year 2003. In the absence of Joan English while on holiday, members were informed that a final decision has been reached to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the club, founded in May 1982. The celebration will take members by coach to a day out around Bath. This will include lunch at a hotel, a sightseeing trip of the area and will round off the day with a complimentary tea (courtesy of the club funds). Malcolm Faulkner, from Birmingham Children's Hospital, was introduced as the evening's speaker. Before working as a fundraiser for the hospital, he had gained much experience first of all as an office clerk, then as a Butlins Redcoat and finally as a tour guide/holiday representative for Cosmos holidays. When he had become homesick for dear old Blighty, he became the chief fundraiser for the Children's Hospital in Birmingham, and proceeded to raise thousands and thousands of pounds. He showed a video film of the work in the hospital, while adding his own comments on the work of all the staff, including the education/teaching staff. Even children in hospital can't escape from lessons! During his work he met the Queen and Prince Philip when they came to visit the hospital after it had been moved from the old site to the new site in Steelhouse Lane, and then renamed Diana, Princess of Wales Children's Hospital. The Spadesbourne Ladies were all so touched by what Mr Faulkner had to tell us that they dug deep into their purses and pockets at the end of the talk, and raised a very nice sum of money for the hospital funds.   more...

Know the basic facts

Dear Editor - In January Cllr Richard Morris wrote asking Droitwich Spa people to support the proposed new supermarket and Lido developments. So I asked assurances that a replacement market would be provided and trees in the park preserved. He replied that he did not know the answers and passed the buck to Wychavon. A councillor and member of the town council's planning committee should know the answers or find them out in person when asked. It's remarkable that a councillor on the relevant committee publicly seeks support for schemes when not knowing the basic facts about them himself.   more...
