Council helps 3rd Worcester in badge bid

YOUNGSTERS have been helped by Worcester City Council in their quest to secure a set of Cub Scout badges.

Six members of the 3rd Worcester Cub Scout Pack took part in a major clean-up exercise on council-owned land as part of their efforts to win the global conservation badges.

Pack leader Jane Davis approached the council to come up with a suitable location for the task.

Officers responded by not only cutting the land at the rear of the Sainsbury's supermarket, in Windermere Drive, Warndon, ahead of the Cubs' rubbish-clearance operation, but also provided protective clothing, litter-pickers and other equipment.

The eight to 10-year-olds collected 14 bags of litter as well as other rubbish, including a dumped car battery and broken glass.

"The Cubs worked really hard during the time we were there and they felt they had achieved something really worthwhile," said Mrs Davis.

"They're all working very hard to get their badges and I would like to thank the city council for its support in this project."

She added that the clear-up project formed just a part of the activities required to qualify for the badge and that the Cubs were still engaged in other initiatives.

These include making bird-tables and bird-boxes, as well as this week's group exercise at the Countryside Centre alongside the council's Project Greenspace officer, Rory McClure.

Phil Burton, the city council parks and cemeteries officer, said the authority was always prepared to help groups involved in similar ecology projects.

"Trying to find the right site was a bit of an exercise at first, but they were so keen to help we just couldn't turn them away," he added.
