LADIES' GUILD: Many members attended the July meeting, the last before the summer break. An interesting talk, given by Andy Holding and illustrated with slides, informed members of many facts and figures relating to Birmingham Airport. The chairman gave the vote of thanks. A surprise visitor, Tony Moy, a former British rally driver and Worcester-born, was introduced by Mrs Botterill. He had driven from Market Harborough in a Skoda car, which was one of two donated by Mr and Mrs Botterill in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief, the charity recently supported by the Ladies' Guild. Tony Moy and a group of enthusiasts are planning to drive to Prague in September in Skodas which must not have cost more than £300 and they hope to raise £25,000 for MCR. This car, named the Blue Streak, will bear the logo of Pershore Ladies' Guild. After the tea interval, Mrs Lockhart welcomed four visitors, also Mrs Cole, back to the Guild after a spell of ill-health. Mrs L Grove has had major surgery and is now recuperating and it was good to see that Mrs Gosney was present so soon after having a major operation. Mrs Gosney thanked members for cards and support. Members agreed that a letter should be sent to South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust protesting at the planned closure of two wards at Evesham Hospital. Future events were mentioned - Mrs Passmore's coffee morning on August 3 in Worcester, when there will be a home-baking table and raffle; the outing on August 9 round Bredon Hill villages and a wine and cheese charity evening on September 23 in Wychavon Civic Centre. Thanks were expressed to Mrs J Herbert for directing the Guilded Lilies for their performance at the summer lunch. The literary appreciation group had read and then discussed the book Notes on a Scandal by Zoe Heller at their recent meeting - there had been mixed reactions to it. The sales table raised £26 and the next one will be tins and jars.   more...

INTEREST AND LEISURE CLUB: Recently the club had an outing to the National Trust property of West Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. There is a picturesque village which has old buildings dating back to the 15th century. West Wycombe Park and mansion was partly designed by Robert Adam and built for Sir Francis Dashwood of the Hell-Fire-Club fame in the 18th century who also instigated the rebuilding of the church topped with a large golden globe. West Wycombe Caves are historically fascinating and also helped keep members cool and out of the sun on such a hot day. The caves too are associated with Sir Francis Dashwood. Mavis McLoughlin, on behalf of members, gave a warm vote of thanks to Angela and Alan for arranging such an interesting day.   more...

DEFIBRILLATOR: Ilmington will soon have its own defibrillator - the important machine that can save lives in the event of a cardiac arrest. The British Heart Foundation has approved the application and made a grant of £467.65 - half the cost of the machine. The other half of the cost is available from generous donations from villagers and the proceeds of the spring concert by the Tarantara choir. The assessors at the British Heart Foundation have commented that it was a good application that will truly improve response time in this rural area. Meetings will be arranged in the village hall in the autumn - one to brief the responders who will operate the scheme and the organisers. The second meeting will explain the workings of the defibrillator to villagers.   more...

Secretary Edith Capell, in announcing the raising of £400 for the village hall appeal fund, spoke admiringly of the energy and commitment shown by the society's members in getting their gardens ready for inspection.   more...

Members arrive at around 10.30am for coffee and biscuits which gives a chance to catch up on news. NOTICE FOR PUBLIC READING... 14FT UP A POLE

IT'S a public notice with a twist the public can't actually read it unless they happen to be carrying a ladder. A temporary traffic restriction notice has been cheekily placed around 14ft up a pole, near the Elgar Statue in High Street, Worcester. Tom Comerford, the city council's senior engineer for transportation and traffic management, believes pranksters may have been responsible. Mr Comerford said: We put public notices up at eye level. We haven't had this happen before." He added that the notice is due to be brought down to a readable level in the next few days.
