BRAVE pirates and wimpy policemen fought it out in a production of Pirates of Penzance at St George's Catholic School in Sansome Place, Worcester. Children from year six acted out the main characters but all pupils from the junior school took part in Gilbert & Sullivan's famous operetta. Teacher Berny Murray said it had taken about four weeks to rehearse and the final production was impressive. "They've really grown into their parts," she said. "We've definitely got some budding actors and actresses and the parents have just loved it." PARISH COUNCIL: At their June meeting, chaired by cllr Tony Wilkins, parish councillors heard that the Cotswold AONB marker stone at the junction of Front Street and Mickleton Road had been moved. The chairman reported that he had attended a meeting at which section 136 payments was discussed, and that he had spoken against the ending of the district council's reimbursement of expenditure on mowing and repairs to play equipment. John Maples, MP, had written to explain that the majority of people in the district would benefit from the new system, and county councillor Issy Seccombe said that it would reduce council tax by three per cent. The parish council was still not happy about this, because people in other areas used the facilities of the playing field almost more than Ilmington residents, and Ilmington ratepayers would now have to finance all the costs of providing these facilities for the benefit of the whole district.   more...

WICK WIVES: The meeting on June 27 was held at Waveney, home of Beryl Burton. Seventeen members gathered to hear Mr. Fossey talk of his years as a toastmaster. He officiated at many events, including one attended by The Queen. He entertained members with accounts of his many experiences, sometimes having to cope with the unexpected. The vote of thanks was given by Sarah Wilson. Refreshments were served by the hostess and committee members. The raffle prize was won by Ann Latchford   more...
